IT Matters teams up with Scorpion Software to deliver strong authentication solutions to the Oil and Gas industry of Alberta

For Immediate Release

IT Matters teams up with Scorpion Software to deliver strong authentication solutions to the Oil and Gas industry of Alberta

Chilliwack, BC: May 1, 2008 - Scorpion Software is pleased to announce a partnership with IT Matters to deliver our AuthAnvil Strong Authentication Server solution to the Calgary small business market that serves and supports Canada's oil and gas industry.

Combining IT Matter's expertise in deploying Microsoft server solutions and Sonicwall firewall and VPNs with Scorpion Software's industry leading AuthAnvil product provides a unique and highly secure solution that eliminates the inherent weaknesses in static password security. Instead of relying on passwords that can be shared, stolen or easily guessed, clients of IT Matters can now gain the safety and protection of two-factor authentication technology that has before only been available to the enterprise space.

Leveraging hardware token technology that has protected the infrastructure of Los Alamos Laboratories, Apple Computers and even Google, AuthAnvil's CryptoCard KT-1 tokens provides a way for businesses to safeguard their company assets from untrusted remote access by using dynamically generated one-time-passwords (OTP) to assure the identity of remotely connected users. AuthAnvil delivers the same level of protection at a fraction of the cost, and has been found to be much easier to use than its enterprise competitors.

The partnership with Scorpion Software allows IT Matters to deliver more secure strong authentication services to Microsoft Windows Server, Sonicwall firewalls and SSL VPN services. When a request is made from the Internet to access the network, AuthAnvil authenticates this request by challenging the user to enter in their personal PIN along with their OTP. Similar to how you need to present your ATM card along with your PIN to access you bank account, for the first time businesses can now know with a high level of certainty who is accessing their critical corporate assets from anywhere in the world. This offering can assist many of IT Matter clients that are looking to meet compliance objectives for standards such as PCI and CSOX or any business concerned about their overall security.

AuthAnvil meets requirements to safeguard Personally Identifiable Information

So with our last press release, we got quite a bit of interest around the world. One of the more interesting things we saw was that we were commended by Susan Bradley, prominent Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) expert, on the fact that we have brought two-factor authentication to the SMB space.

In a blog post on her popular SBS blog, she commented that a few months ago she was involved in a "Minimum security practices" benchmark setting with the Center for Internet Security group. The goal of the project was to define a bare minimum security standard needed to properly secure personal identity information (PII) or other sensitive information on computers of every shape and size, including peer to peer, networks, and yes, even SBS. And when it got to the section where two-factor authentication (2FA) was being discussed, she pushed back saying that the technology wasn't mature enough to make it a bare minimum practice to safeguard PII.

But with what she has seen from the release of AuthAnvil (she's one of our clients), she has changed her mind.

In her words, "... now security for sensitive information is clearly within reach for all sized firms." She goes on to say that:

So if I was doing that task force today? Two factor authentication is do-able for small businesses and now clearly within reach.

All thanks to AuthAnvil. Talk about an endorsement! Heck, CRYPTOCard was so pleased with it, they even sent out a press release today about it! The fact we use their enterprise ready tokens while delivering our own SMB designed Strong Authentication Server (SAS) software, our clients are getting best of breed technology, leveraged through software solutions designed FOR them. And that is what makes 2FA more approachable in our space. We finally have the highest-quality of authentication security solutions available to us in the SMB space.

So if you want enterprise-level authentication security, at an SMB price, come talk to us. Sign up for a personal AuthAnvil Test Drive and we can explore your needs and see if we can help you out! Not sure if you can afford it?
Scorpion Software partners with CRYPTOCard to deliver AuthAnvil, the first two-factor authentication solution for small business

When communicating with customers we sometimes get asked if we are a resellers of CRYPTOCard solutions, since we use CRYPTOCard tokens in our AuthAnvil solutions. Nothing could be further from the truth. To be honest, at one point, we were a CRYPTOCard customer. That's right, we used to use their stuff. But we are not resellers. We are a company focused on building our own strong authentication solutions... targeted directly to solve the password problem for small business.

When we were customers of CRYPTOCard, we found a few challenges. As a small business leveraging a lot of Microsoft technology like Small Business Server 2003 and firewall technology from Sonicwall, we found that it was difficult to manage an enterprise solution like CRYPTOCard within our small business IT infrastructure. With a lot of resource overhead, the system was quite taxing on our environment, and not really friendly to our needs. Which is OK... rarely is small business IT and enterprise IT aligned with the same deployment issues. But we DO have the same pain points when it comes to static reusable passwords. There had to be a better way.

So I approached Bill LaHam from CRYPTOCard last year and expressed my concerns. We both quickly realized an opportunity existed here. They make great token technology, and we build great software for small businesses. The result was AuthAnvil, a two-factor authentication system DESIGNED for small business. What does that really mean though? It means we removed the IT complexity of much of the system, and heterogenously tied it to the Windows eco-system.

Technically, we take entirely different approaches to solving the same underlying problem.

If you were to buy a 5 user token pack from CRYPTOCard you would get a system developed in Java running on top of Tomcat/Apache that speaks to a MySQL database and generates a 6 digit one-time password. On SBS 2003, this more than doubled our resource overhead on our server, and through best practices required us to move it to a SECOND server to deploy properly. (It is possible to get it on the same server, but its rather difficult... and an UNSUPPORTED configuration by CRYPTOCard) .

AuthAnvil on the otherhard was written in .NET on top of IIS and speaks to the built in SQL Server database on SBS 2003. Those resources are already on the system (or are auto-upgraded with our installer), and makes deployment rather easy. Our tokens are shipped offering an 8 alphanumeric one-time password, which significantly increases the number of possible passwords, and makes it extremely more difficult to attack.

Now you CAN do the same thing with CRYPTOCard's solution by reprogramming the tokens. (And I suggest you do if you haven't already). And that gets to the heart of the differences.

As information security professionals that understand the threat landscape for small business, we have removed the complexity for you by making security decisions based on our experience and expertice. You don't have to program the tokens yourself. You don't have to make configuration changes to the system. It's all done FOR you. Instead of wading through over a 100 different configurable settings, you have 5. That's right... 5. And as we move forward and mature our products we are going to make it integrate even better into the Windows ecosystem and your small business networks.

It has been a real pleasure working with CRYPTOCard to design this solution. They make great token technology that protects huge enterprises like Apple Computer, Los Alamos Laboratories and Google. Its been nice working with professionals that understand and accept the differences that small businesses have than their enterprise counterparts. And everyone benefits from this. Finally small businesses can get access to enteprise-level identity and access control security, at a fraction of the cost. And its not just a repackaged enterprise solution being shoved at us. AuthAnvil was designed FOR small business.... by small business.

Today CRYPTOCard published a press release discussing our partnership. Bill was even quoted to say:

AuthAnvil is an incredible solution - its tight integration with Small Business Server and well conceived management interface will have most SMBs authenticating in a matter of minutes.

Thanks Bill! And he's right... most people have AuthAnvil up and running on Small Business Server in a manner of minutes, and are logging into Remote Web Workplace using two-factor authentication and our RWW-Guard product in less than 15 minutes.

And we even have a few customers now who have ALSO been able to integrate AuthAnvil into their own line of business applications in house. One such office added AuthAnvil two-factor authentication to a custom sharepoint site they have that manages their entire office, in a matter of an hour after I released a HOWTO video on consuming the web service in AuthAnvil. And they spent the first 10 minutes watching the video!! Now their employees don't need to know ANOTHER password for their office. They can leverage their existing AuthAnvil deployment and use the same token to authenticate to different systems.

This is getting exciting.

So if you are a small business and looking for two-factor authentication, give AuthAnvil a try. Combining CRYPTOCard's awesome token technology with our own software designed for the Windows Server ecosystem, you have one powerful system that FINALLY brings identity and access control through strong authentication to small business.

Scorpion Software Previews Carina Intrusion Prevention System at West Coast Security Forum 2004

For Immediate Release

Scorpion Software Previews Carina Intrusion Prevention System at West Coast Security Forum 2004

Chilliwack, BC: November 22, 2004 - Scorpion Software Corp. announces today that it is now previewing its upcoming Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) for the Microsoft Windows server platform at the West Coast Security Forum. Codenamed "Carina", this host based endpoint security solution can be deployed into Microsoft Windows environments to drastically reduce, and in many cases completely remove, many security related risks that servers and workstations may be exposed and vulnerable to. These risks include the execution of hostile or malicious code that exploit vulnerable software to access information resources, as seen in viruses, trojan horses, spyware, adware and even more sophisticated illegal data mining programs.

"Carina has been found to be far more effective than just antivirus or firewall protection alone. Most antivirus, firewall and intrusion detection (IDS) protections are only capable of defending against known threats due to their reliance on constantly updating 'signatures' of known attack patterns. Carina has been designed to learn and understand the normal behaviors of the host it is installed onto and can block UNKNOWN threats that are anomalous and breach acceptable access control policies. As such, Carina offers IT administrators the opportunity to defend their information resources even before the world understands a new threat vector or attack pattern has occurred, and even before signatures can be created and deployed for antivirus and intrusion detection systems." said Dana Epp, CEO of Scorpion Software Corp. "Our goal with Carina is to ensure that our customers are able to protect their most important business assets - their proprietary information".

About Scorpion Software

Scorpion Software Corp. is an independent software vendor (ISV) that designs and delivers computer security software to increase the security effectiveness of Microsoft Windows environments. This security software suite helps to protect information by providing data and system integrity assurance levels through the prevention of damage to desktops and servers from attack, and prevention of desktops and servers from launching attacks while connected to the corporate network.
