MSPU webinar on leveraging strong authentication in MSP environments now available for viewing

Last week Erick Simpson and the crew of MSP University invited me to come speak about leveraging strong authentication to reduce business and technical risk to MSP environments. Erick and I spent an hour discussing the weakness in static password and how HR issues such as staff turn over cause administrative burdens to MSP businesses when it comes to password management. We discussed how products like AuthAnvil can help to reduce those risks and burdens to acceptable levels, and I even did a short demonstration showing how two-factor authenticaiton and identity assurance can work.

You can register to watch a recording of the webinar as well as other MSP University content by clicking here.

If you watch the webinar all the way through, you will learn how you can get a free download of MSP University's great audio version of their book "The Best I.T. Sales & Marketing BOOK EVER!". You will even be able to take advantage of a special offer from Scorpion Software to give AuthAnvil a try.

So what are you waiting for? Register now!

Learn about balancing security risk at the upcoming Microsoft Canadian Strategic Architect Forum

On April 10th I will be hosting a roundtable at Microsoft's invitiation only Canadian Strategic Architect Forum in Vancouver, British Columbia. For those attending, you have an opportunity to explore openly how appying security to business workflow has to be balanced with the real world constraints of budgets vs. acceptable risk.

Below is the abstract:

Security is about risk mitigation, not risk avoidance. When considering the checks and balances of developing and/or deploying technical safeguards to reduce business risk to acceptable levels, it may be seen as too expensive to design in from the start. In this roundtable, we will explore the implications of applying security to business workflow, and discuss openly how this balances with the real world constraints of budgets vs. acceptable risk.

So if you are part of the elite group of Microsoft architects coming to the forum, I look forward to seeing you there. Bring your hardest real world questions about how to manage business risk while architecting these critical systems and behind closed doors we can really get into a discussion about just how to find the right balance to mitigate these risk to acceptable levels, and how to best measure that within your organization.

Attend SMB Summit and learn about the risks of remote access

If there is one investment you should make for your company to get the strategic business and technical knowledge and build valuable peer relationships with other successful partners and vendors, it would be the 4th annual SMB Summit. Partners will get first hand information and knowledge on new products and services that supplement your customers' solution.

And if you are going, you can come sit in my session where I will talk about the business risk of remote access, especially for remote management, and how Identity Assurance (IA) and strong authentication can help reduce those risks.

Below is the abstract of my presentation:

Extending remote access for critical business assets to employees, partners and customers is vital for many Internet-enabled businesses of today. Along with the benefits of additional accessibility and increased productivity comes the potential for more business risk. Employee turn-over, weak passwords, and untrusted remote systems all act as catalysts to provide an unprecedented threat landscape for potential business loss. In this session, attendees will be introduced to the concepts of identity assurance (IA) and how IA can be used to securely manage remote access to sensitive business assets, and explore some of the new technologies in Windows Server 2008 that help to reduce these risks.

So what are you waiting for? Book a flight to Las Colinas, Texas and join us from April 18-21st. My session is on April 20th from 10:45-12:00pm. Register now.

Please join us for a Webinar on Strong Authentication for MSPs

The threat landscape that makes up network use has always shown that unabridged access for TRUSTED users can cause significant damage to a business. From information disclosure and theft to malicious or accidental destruction, it is far too easy for staff to cause harm if they mean to or not, especially when no one knows who it is. It can be a huge HR issue.

It gets worse for MSPs. Now you not only have to protect your own network against internal staff, you also have to protect your client's network. When a staff member leaves your organization, what processes and procedures do you have in place to change login credentials and prevent them from accessing remote client sites? What could they do if you don't change the credentials? These are real risks, and ones that your clients SHOULD be concerned with. In other words, you need to show best efforts to protect your clients from your employees... a situation most MSPs don't think about.

Erick Simpson over at MSPU has invited me to participate in a webinar to discuss these risks, and talk about how you can use AuthAnvil to help battle these threats. Join us on Wednesday, April 9th at 8:00am PST and learn for yourself how we can help with this issue. And as a special bonus, you will get Erick's audio book on "The Best I.T. Sales & Marketing BOOK EVER!" for FREE. That's a $59 value!

To top that off, all attendees who stay to the end of the webinar and fill out a survey will be put in a draw for an AuthAnvil Starter Kit, which includes 5 tokens and a 1 year subscription to AuthAnvil and RWW-Guard, absolutely free. That's an $875 value!!

So what are you waiting for? Go register for the webinar now.

Dana Epp to speak at the SMB Security Summit

Featuring some of the world's most respected SMB Security experts, this event focuses on how SMB IT Resellers understand customer security requirements, design solutions to respond to determined threats, and sell and implement end solutions. SBSfaq.com in conjunction with Trend Micro are hosting this free community event in Sydney, Australia on November 23, 2007.

You can find more information and register for the event at http://events.sbsfaq.com/2007SMBSS.aspx.

I will be there speaking in various trackings. Susan Bradley and I will be teaming up to discuss risk analysis and how security is perceived and understood at the customer level. I will then speak later in the day with Wayne Small and discuss some of the technical aspects of implementing security, and explore the tools and technical safeguards that exist out there to help reduce risk to acceptable levels for your customers.

Included in that will be discussion about strong authentication and identity assurance. Time permitting, I may even show how we protect our own deployment of Trend Micro's Security Dashboard with AuthAnvil, demonstrating how layered security can effectively reduce management risk to web applications. Nothing beats having the assurance that you know WHO is accessing critical services that provide the management to the security capabailities of all servers and workstations on the network. You can get that assurance when using the AuthAnvil Web Logon Agent to protect your Security Dashboard. Just one of the new agents that is coming with Version 1.5 of AuthAnvil, due out at the end of the month.

So if you are in Sydney on November 23rd, you really should come out. Along side of the presentations I am giving there are several other excellent experts like Amy Babinchak, Eriq Neale, Dean Calvert and Ryan Spillane who will demonstrate issues and solutions in the SMB Security space.

See you there!

Security Audits - How to Implement Them and What to Look For

If you've been running a business for more than a few days, chances are some sort of malware has squiggled into your network. And if you're bigger than just a few computers, chances are your users have brought in something that's compromising your network, including rogue wireless access points, inappropriate file sharing, and peer-to-peer systems. Plus, application holes and their patches seem to crop up with startling regularity these days.

If you are a small business and interested in learning more on what you can do about this, come join me during a PC Magazine webcast event on April 26th at 2pm EST where we are going to explore this. In this event we will describe first exactly why you should conduct regular security audits, help you develop a check list of key elements to look for, and then walk you through the best practices of conducting a security audit - and then fixing the problems – for small businesses.

And I won't be alone in discussing this. Moderated by John Dickinson from PC Magazine, Jon Clay (Trend Micro) and Cory Scott (Symantec) will join me in taking your questions about security audits and how they can be an effective addition to the security analytics for your business.

You can get more information, including instructions on how to register, by clicking here.

Come join the conversation! I hope to see you there.

Small Business and the 5 Rules of the Regulatory Process

Take your business to the next level.

This week Microsoft is holding the Small Business Summit to celebrate YOUR potential. During this FREE four-day online event, some of the leading voices in business today will present ways to get more from your IT investment, save time and money in running your business, and better connect with and market to your customers.

I have been asked to present in the "Computer Security" track on the topic of "Is Your Business in Regulatory Compliance". The topic title doesn't do justice to what I will be speaking about. Managing security to meet regulatory compliance is a growing area of focus for small businesses. Addressing regulatory compliance requirements encompasses a combination of operational processes and technical controls in support of good business practices. I will be presenting my thoughts on how small business can leverage regulatory compliance requirements as assets to their business, through a set of rules I designed called the "5 Rules of the Regulatory Process". These rules break the shackles of complex regulatory compliance workflow and allows small business to meet many compliance objectives WITHOUT having to spend an enterprise-style budget to do so. And more importantly... add value to the business at the same time.

Want to learn more? Then come listen to me speak. They will be webcasting the event, so you won't even have to leave your desk!

Title: Is Your Business in Regulatory Compliance?
Speaker: Dana Epp, Microsoft Security MVP
Date: 03/16/2006
Time: 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM PST

You can signup by clicking here. I hope to see you at the presentation!
